The Science of Breathing

Your breath is uniquely powerful in that it is a self –regulating mechanism for balancing the central nervous system. Research shows that taking in a series of full relaxed breaths naturally engages the parasympathetic nervous system.
The parasympathetic nervous system is one of the branches of the automatic central nervous system. It is composed mainly of the cranial and sacral spinal nerves.
The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for the body’s rest and digestive response when the body is relaxed, resting or feeding. It undoes the work of the sympathetic nervous system (which activates the body’s fight, flight or freeze response) after a stressful situation has been experienced. Its function is to decrease respiration, heart rate and aid in digestion.
